The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, on Wednesday, launched a full-scale investigation following a physical altercation between a female student and a lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Michael, at the Faculty of Arts.
A senior lecturer in the university, who would not want his name on print, revealed that the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu, has ordered a transparent and unbiased inquiry into the incident, which has sparked widespread discussion on social media.
Yesterday, the social media was awash with videos of the incident.
Confrontation began when Dr. Michael interrupted a video recording by the student, leading to a heated argument.
In a widely circulated video, the student was seen dancing at the entrance of a campus building while being filmed.
As Dr. Michael passed by, he tapped her on the shoulder to make way for himself. The student, appearing upset, questioned why he had touched her.
It was gathered that the matter took another dimension when Dr. Michael overheard her comments and returned to address the situation. Upon realizing she was recording, he attempted to prevent being filmed, which led to a struggle. The student allegedly reacted by grabbing his clothes, biting him multiple times, and tearing his outfit.
In a statement, the university’s Acting Head of Information, Public Relations, and Protocol, Njelita Louis, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to discipline and ethical conduct.
He assured that all necessary actions would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The university urged all concerned parties to remain calm as the investigation unfolds.
“UNIZIK upholds strict moral and ethical standards, ensuring that cases of misconduct are handled with fairness and due process,” the statement concluded.
