Over six thousand applications have been received from women in Anambra State under the Trade Skills empowerment training of the wife of the State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike made the disclosure in a press conference at the Light House, Awka, on the achievements of the Anambra First Lady through her non-profit organization, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo.

The initiative floated earlier this year, would see women get training on special skills originally reserved for the male gender, such Solar and CCTV installation and maintenance, POP works, Keke Maintenance, Carpentry, and electrical installations.

After the training, successful graduates will be empowered with start-up funds by the wife of the governor.

According to Commissioner Obidike, about 100 women in Anambra State have been selected and are presently undergoing training on trade skills, as part of the governor’s wife’s efforts to empower families with meaningful livelihoods.

He noted that the training will be hands-on to ensure that the trainees are well equipped to undertake the jobs, adding that the trainees will proceed on industrial training at some point in the process to acquire practical knowledge.

On the duration for the training, Obidike said it will vary between 3-6 months, noting that only those who are successful will graduate and be empowered.

Outlining other numerous achievements of the first lady, Obidike revealed that Dr Soludo had initiated a strategic partnership with the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which has unlocked opportunities for Anambra people, especially women.

According to him, “These opportunities are not abstract or promises—they are real, measurable, and verifiable. They touch mothers, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and indeed every community.”

Obidike said the partnership was such that Dr Soludo was inspired by Senator Tinubu, and for every empowerment sent down to the state for women and indigent, Mrs Soludo adds equivalent of same amount of her own money to ensure that a wider range of persons benefit from it.

“The First Lady has reached out through orphanages and special homes visitation, showing compassion to the most vulnerable.

“Community youth engagements in all the LGA have inspired thousands of young people to live healthy and productive lives.

“There is also the pad banks in over 350 secondary schools, where girls no longer have to miss classes due to menstrual challenges.

“More than 26,000 elderly people have received free multivitamin supplements to support healthy aging, dignity kits to elderly during flooding, 1,000 persons with disabilities have been enrolled free into the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, lifetime scholarships awarded to brilliant indigent children, over 15,000 packs of hybrid seeds have been freely distributed to encourage home gardens and food security, among others,” he stated.
