Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State has emerged winner of the Insurance Quiz Competition organised by the Department of Banking and Finance, Faculty of Management Sciences, at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
The institution defeated competitors from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Imo State University, and the host university to clinch the top position in the contest sponsored by International Energy Insurance (IEI) Plc
Announcing the results after a written examination that preceded the competition, Ifeoma Amakor said ESUT placed second, while IMT finished third.
Amakor said the winning institutions received cash prizes of N300,000, N200,000 and N100,000 for the first, second and third positions respectively.
She added that participants who finished in fourth and fifth positions were rewarded with N20,000 each.
According to the Professor of Finance, the quiz questions were drawn from the provisions of the new Insurance Act and were designed to expose students to contemporary developments in the insurance industry.
“The objective is to educate students on the content of the Act and broaden their understanding of practical insurance operations beyond what is taught in the classroom.
“The quiz is primarily an educational exercise and not merely a competition,” she said.
Earlier, Chairman of the occasion, Chijioke Nwafor urged students to pursue professional qualifications alongside their academic studies to enhance their employability after graduation.
He advised insurance students to register with relevant professional bodies and complete the required examinations while still in school.
“Do not focus only on classroom learning. Professional certification will make you more competitive and better prepared for opportunities in the industry,” he said.
Nwafor also pledged support for professionally certified insurance graduates, promising to facilitate employment opportunities for those unable to secure jobs after graduation.
